Face It, Embrace It, Defy It, Conquer It

Victoria Arlen

Our 2017 ANA Inspiration Award recipient has already inspired millions around the world with her incredible story of defying the odds and reaching for the stars. Victoria’s life drastically changed at the age of eleven when she developed two rare conditions which left her in a vegetative state for nearly four years. “Locked” inside her own body completely aware of what was going on but unable to move or communicate, doctors believed there was little hope of survival and recovery was unlikely. Victoria was not ready to give up. In 2010, after almost four years, she began the nearly impossible fight back to life—learning how to speak, eat and move all over again. She not only recovered, but went on to win three Silvers and a Gold medal in swimming from the London 2012 Paralympic Games as well as multiple World, American and Pan American Records. She has recently transitioned from professional athlete to a successful ESPN Broadcaster.

Victoria is a true inspiration to all and is the embodiment of her message - “Face It, Embrace It, Defy It, Conquer It.”
